Hobgoblins 2: It... doesn't stink?

The Hobgoblins episode of MST3k is one my favorite's. While it's known as a bad movie, its highly entertaining, and has a high replay value. Not many movies can say that, the worst mistake a movie can make is to be boring. So I was pretty excited when I read about Hobgoblins 2. It's no secret that the sequel is capitalizing on the originals new found fame spawned by the MST3K episode. Luckily, it worked out well. The dvd came out today, and I wasted no time in getting a copy then watching it. I'm happy to say that it's a great throwback to the original. The movie's greatest strength is it's humor, the jokes are pretty damn funny. While the first one was a great train-wreck, the sequel offers nothing to make fun of. The film laughs with you the whole time, poking fun at itself along with genre cliches. Not in a pretentious way either, you can tell director Rick Sloane is a legitimate fan of horror and exploitation movies.
The film is well made, it's shot on 35mm and it shows. Movies like this are a rare breed now, store shelves are packed with digital pieces of garbage(hello Boa vs. Python). The once laughable Hobgoblin puppets actually better then some of the cgi monsters seen now(Cloverfield). At the end of the day, Hobgoblins 2 is fun and thats what counts.

OLDBOY : It Stinks

After reading all the great reviews about this "revenge" movie, I decided I should check it out. Oops. Ok, so the movie gets off to a pretty good start. The first hour or so is pretty intriguing, I was pleasantly surprised. The story is about how Oldboy is kidnapped and imprisoned in a hotel room for 15 years. He doesn't know who did it or why. So finally, on one random day he is released, and slowly uncovers who his captors were. It doesn't sound like a bad concept, and it isn't. But ultimately, it is executed incredibly poorly. Spoilers ahead.
At one point during the movie I thought to myself "please tell me this isn't about incest". Yes, incest. "How the hell did they work incest into the film? " You ask? Well, I'll tell you. Apparently one day in school Oldboy saw a brother and sister doing it and told his friend about it. Unwittingly, he caused the rumor to spread throughout the whole school. The sister ended up killing herself, thankfully, and the brother swore revenge on Oldboy. I can't believe it's that stupid. So finally, Oldboy meets the brother, and begs for his forgiveness! No revenge, no payoff, nothing! He even cuts out his own tongue, and crawls around barking like a dog. Making it one of the stupidest, tedious, most pathetic endings ever committed to film. I think most people like the movie because is it's foreign, and think this is some type of artistic shit. Sonny Chiba would kick this sissie's ass. I've seen plenty of foreign movies and I'm not fooled. Oldboy stinks.

Friday The 13th Remake: It Stinks

Curiosity got to me, I went ahead and rented the Friday The 13th remake. I guess you can say I should of known what I was getting myself into. Believe me, I didn't think it would be this bad. Imagine Dawson's Creek but longer, with a greenish tint. Same writers and all. Consequently, there is not one likable character in this movie, not even Jason. The stock characters are so dreadfully irritating that you'll wanna break through the screen and kill them yourself. Luckily though, the kills themselves are surprisingly well done, but they still couldn't save this mess from appearing on the WB's fall lineup. Honestly, Jason X was better then this. I don't know how anyone can like it... But it seems that some horror fans do, and if you like eating shit on a stick, then enjoy.
