Hobgoblins 2: It... doesn't stink?

The Hobgoblins episode of MST3k is one my favorite's. While it's known as a bad movie, its highly entertaining, and has a high replay value. Not many movies can say that, the worst mistake a movie can make is to be boring. So I was pretty excited when I read about Hobgoblins 2. It's no secret that the sequel is capitalizing on the originals new found fame spawned by the MST3K episode. Luckily, it worked out well. The dvd came out today, and I wasted no time in getting a copy then watching it. I'm happy to say that it's a great throwback to the original. The movie's greatest strength is it's humor, the jokes are pretty damn funny. While the first one was a great train-wreck, the sequel offers nothing to make fun of. The film laughs with you the whole time, poking fun at itself along with genre cliches. Not in a pretentious way either, you can tell director Rick Sloane is a legitimate fan of horror and exploitation movies.
The film is well made, it's shot on 35mm and it shows. Movies like this are a rare breed now, store shelves are packed with digital pieces of garbage(hello Boa vs. Python). The once laughable Hobgoblin puppets actually better then some of the cgi monsters seen now(Cloverfield). At the end of the day, Hobgoblins 2 is fun and thats what counts.
